Day 6 Good Bye Lumen

Last night a very nice couple came to visit me.  Oh, just wait, Mom says they came visit Lumen to see if she thought they would be OK to be her new Mom and Dad.  You know how I've mentioned that Lumen hasn't allowed any men to pet her?  Well she went up to Patrick like they were the best of friends! Mom knew right then that these were the right people for Lumen.  I like them a whole lot too.  And they really liked Lumen.  This wasn't surprising as Lumen is a great dog.

Today they came to pick up Lumen and take her to her new home.  I'm sure she's going to love it there because I hear there are some new toys and a bed for her and lots of good food to fatten her up a bit.

This is the last picture that Mom took of Lumen and I together.  We are both very good at sharing and even liked to drink out of the water bowl at the same time.  I'm glad that Lumen has found her forever home but Mom and I are going to miss Lumen a lot!

Day 4 Lumen Meets Ike

Last night Mom, Lumen and I went to one of my favorite places to visit; Ike's house.  I don't pay much attention to Ike but I sure do like his Mom and Dad!  I've talked about Ike before, he is our 'cat tester' for the foster dogs.  I'm not sure he really likes the job, but he does it really well.

Ike also felt it was about time he got his picture on the blog since he's the one that has to put up with all these strange dogs in his house...so here he is.  He sat, not very quietly, on the couch while Lumen came up to check him out.  Lumen went up to Ike and gave him a little sniff.  Ike hissed and gave her a swat (don't worry, he doesn't have claws).  Lumen decided that she had better things to do than be near a cranky cat and she was off the investigate somewhere else.

Lumen really enjoyed the visit.  She waltzed right in like she'd been there a hundred times before, said hello to Ike's Mom with no issues and went to check out the house.  Although, just like at the dog park, Lumen didn't want Ike's Dad to pet her.  She didn't run away from him, but move her head away when he reached out towards her.  Later, she walked over him (he was lying on the carpet) and around him with no problems, but still didn't want him to touch her.  Lumen loves it so much when Mom shows her affection that she still thinks Lumen just needs to spend some time around men who treat her kindly and learn that they are OK too.

As you can see Lumen has mastered sit.  Mom is also working on some other commands like 'off', 'come' and 'shake a paw'.  Today we went to the dog park and Lumen got to go off leash!  This was great because I had someone to run and play with.  Lumen came every time Mom called her back so she's getting pretty good at 'come' too.

Day 2 Dog Park

Lumen is feeling much better today and is acting a lot more like a one year old dog.  Lumen weighs about 50 lbs and is all legs so she's a bit silly to watch when she starts to play like a puppy.  Sometimes Lumen doesn't understand how much bigger she is and starts to play too rough.  This scares me a little.  It's not like when King Lear was here and I could put him in his place!

Today we went to the dog park.  Lumen wanted to run, but she had to stay on the leash because she was spayed yesterday.  Lumen did pretty well on the leash.  There was a bit of pulling at first but she calmed down after a few minutes. The dog park is a really exciting place and Lumen needs some exercise so all things considered Mom thought she did pretty well.  Lumen politely greeted all the dogs we saw.  The same for most of the people that we met.  A couple of times people tried to greet her by extending a hand and she would back away.  The first time it happened Mom asked the man if he would come back and really try to greet and pet her.  He did and Lumen backed away from him again.  His dogs were playing around us and Lumen decided she was more interested in greeting them.  During this time Lumen was right up beside the guy and didn't mind him at all.  It seems she more shy then scared.  Mom thinks with more socializing Lumen will gain confidence and she'll be fine.

Lumen slept all night in the big kennel last night.  Mom is a very light sleeper and is pretty sure that Lumen didn't leave the kennel all night.  She could have slept anywhere, except on the bed.  Which of course is where Lumen would really like to be.

Lumen seems to think that if she just has her front half on the bed it doesn't count.  She 'sat' like this with just her front legs on the bed for about 15 minutes.  Then she tried to sneak the rest of her up too.  Mom said no, so Lumen just gave up and went to her kennel.  There's a duvet and two blankets in there so it's not really too bad.  Not nice enough that I'm going to sleep in there though!

Day 1 Welcome Lumen

Today Mom came home from work with a new foster dog!  Her name is Lumen...formerly known as Silver, but Mom didn't think that it suited her.  Lumen is a Weimaraner and will be 1 year old this month.

Weimaraners have the most incredible eyes.  Lumen's eyes are a yellow, gold color and seem to light up from within; so Lumen seemed like a good name.

Lumen traveled from the Northwest Territories to Calgary on the weekend.  Today she was spayed and vaccinated.  Lumen is handling the changes pretty well, but is still a bit nervous.  When Mom picked her up she was very timid and wanted nothing to do with her.  It's only been a few hours but Lumen has already warmed up to Mom quite a bit.  She frequently comes to her for some head scratches.  As soon as Mom starts to scratch her head her eyes close and she starts to fall asleep...and sway back and forth.  Lumen is so tired she can hardly stand up, but she just won't relax and have a nap.

Lumen has been helping me monitor the neighbourhood.  As you can see she is very thin and needs to put on a few pounds.  I have some really good treats that I'm going to share with Lumen.  Maybe she even knows some tricks!

Day 9 Good Bye King Lear

Yesterday King Lear went to his new adoptive family....and then I slept for the rest of the day.  The house sure is quiet without him.  Mom still has a few pictures to share from his last days with us.

King Lear is now a pro at sit.  He even sits when strangers come up to him so that he can greet them politely.  Then he gets all excited when the pet him and his puppy craziness come out.

Mom also managed to get a picture of us sitting together.  Mom says I look kind of cranky (I probably need a nap) and King Lear looks a little mischeivious.  There really wasn't a whole lot of attention span for posing so this is as good as it gets.
